I went through a period where I binged as many of John Woo’s Hong Kong films as I could get my hands on, and this is probably my favorite. Blood and tears flow, bullets and doves fly, and the destructive power of violence is on full display, in all its terror and glory.

Peter Finch never got to accept the Oscar he won for his performance as Howard Beale, a discouraged and frustrated news anchor whose angry sermons turn him into a populist hero ripe for exploitation by executives. The Corporate Cosmology scene remains a chilling indictment of mass media.

Sam Mendes created a graphic novel out of celluloid; the rain-soaked frames of tommy-gun fire and soliloquies on damnation and salvation feel like comic panels, and in a period where Hanks was delivering career best performances left and right, this is a true standout.

I knew this was going to be special when I saw that it was shot in 1.19:1 aspect ratio. The format evokes the claustrophobic paranoia of the setting, as the two men drive each other to madness. The final shots are seared into my memory.

Quite possibly my favorite film of all time, this is a tight, technical Cold War thriller carried by an all-star cast. Connery and Sam Neil are a terrific duo as Captain and XO of the titular submarine, and a shockingly young Alec Baldwin is possibly my favorite incarnation of Ryan. Sorry, Harrison

Day-Lewis and Dano have a brutal battle of the egos as a ruthless oilman and a fiery preacher, and every second is riveting. Johnny Greenwood’s score is incredible

A chilling, acid-drenched portrait of inhumanity, its not so much about Vietnam as it is about the war in the human soul, where, as the General says in the beginning, “Good does not always triumph.”
