Aside from Masataka Yoshida (technically a rookie in 2023), Mayer is the first Red Sox rookie to bat cleanup within his first 5 career games since Mo Vaughn on June 29, 1991 in career game No 3. Prior to that, it was Jim Rice in 1974.

Feels like this has been simmering since Devers first spoke to the media in Spring Training.
Devers on his relationship with the team: “Here in the clubhouse, thankfully, the relationship that I have with my teammates is great. I don’t understand some of the decisions that the GM makes. Next thing you know, someone in the outfield gets hurt and they want me to play in the outfield.”
