A new study comparing five different fish species shows that their larval hunting strategies diverged during the course of evolution. Read more: www.bi.mpg.de/news/2025-07...
Fish species evolved different hunting strategies using distinct visual cues
Researchers have described how fish larvae rely on species-specific combinations of vision and movement to detect and capture prey.

This is currently exactly what I’m facing. Leave the country or leave science. And leaving the country is not as easy as everyone thinks it is.

Other countries mostly only want post-docs and other scientists who are much farther along in their career 🫠
A stupid, self-inflicted (or, rather, Trump-inflicted) injury:

"For young researchers, 'there is a lot of pressure to essentially leave the country or not pursue research.…I’m looking at these people who…are extremely accomplished, some of the top in their field…and the door is closing on them.'"
‘It’s a nightmare.’ U.S. funding cuts threaten academic science jobs at all levels

Yesterday was our last day of the 2025 field season!! We’re trying to understand the complex behavioral & physiological relationship between a brood-parasite: the brown-headed cowbird, and their host: the song sparrow.

Spread the word! Turn off the lights (unless you're trapping!), leave the leaves, plant all the native plants in every gap, make a pond, stop using chemicals in the garden. I know I am preaching to the converted but insects are important!
