follower's question: do you think apologies should always fix things? our answer: no, not at all. nor do i think they should. no one is entitled to anyone else's forgiveness, and the goal of apologizing shouldn't solely be to 'fix' something. apologizing is as much about repairing the rift built as it is about taking accountability, acknowledging the harm caused by your actions, and recognizing that it is not a mercy you're giving the person you're apologizing to. genuine apologies come from a place of compassion for the person you've harmed, and not from coveting a state of being from before the harm was done. it's not meant to be an exchange, it is relinquishing control to give someone the option to forgive you for what you've done or not. that being said, i think apologies are necessary -- but it's equally as important to think about WHY you're apologising and WHAT you're really hoping to gain out of it beyond an opportunity to grow and learn.

Blue sets down the grocery bag, looking at Green with a puzzled look on his face. Blue: All I did was get us groceries. Why do you need to thank me for the bare minimum? The puzzled frown disappears from Blue's face as Green answers matter-of-factly. Green: Because I'm grateful to have you.
