Gochujang or fermented red pepper paste dates back to the late 16th/early 17th century. Originally used for medicinal purposes, by the 18th century it became the spicy hang of choice for wealthy Koreans. (Pic: Gochujang & honey glazed carrots made by me)

For many beauty supplies and natural hair care stylists, there is a fear that product prices could go up, which means raising prices for clients. This can hurt them as during economic downturns, many consumers give up luxury services. Hair stylists are considered a luxury good. 2/2

My mom recently asked me how tariffs could impact her business. I have a Masters Degree in Public Policy, which is why she asked. For context she owns a hair salon. Most of her products — as with most hair care products— are imported from China. 1/2

Found a great resource on Joseon palace food from the Korean Food Foundation. If you haven’t, check out Jewels of the Palace, which gives not just recipes but explanations of life for royal cooks.

Wedding Wednesday: This gown was made in Rome in 1901, and shows how much the Art Nouveau movement affected the silhouettes of women's clothing in the period - the swirls on the skirt and train perfectly match its lines. 🗃️🪡 www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...

Though we realize it was a vassal state, Korea managed to maintain its sovereignty until it became completely independent after the first Sino-Japanese war. All this to say, I’m spending the day researching Korean cuisine that dates back to the late Goreyo and early Joseon period. 2/2. #history

The history of Korea is an interesting one, especially in the early modern period. We talk a lot about the Joseon period because it was a long period, but what interests me is the transition from Goreyo to Joseon and how they maintained a strong identity while being a vassal state at one period. 1/2
