I worked for a man born in Hong Kong when I was a teenager. He said education is the only thing that can't be taken away from you. He'd had 8 years of school. I'm 56 now and I don't have a great deal of formal education but I fully understand what he was saying. We have to face the reality

The whole "jailbait" isn't pedophilia conversation this week has been really sad to me. I look back at how subtly normalized it is for adult men to behave inappropriately, with young women and how the girl, who chooses poorly is painted the "slut." Our choices, our consequences. 🙄🙄

I’ve had two conferences—one in the US and one international—change titles of panels or the entire gathering to avoid being targeted or make people’s lives more difficult.
It’s the exact kind of thing the US used to label totalitarian when foreign countries did this to their scholars.

Going to a research conference next week. One of my panels featured researchers coming from Asia, who decided to withdraw given the uncertainty about domestic travel with flight cancelations. Just one more reference point for how the US under Trump has become seen as a basket case country.

People think everyone has always been hyper aware of negative symbolism. I guarantee you some people just put pictures on their body and it's not deep. Military people get tattoos. Spiderwebs and stars on elbows were popular and then it was a gang tat. The punisher skull has history.
