However, there was an unintended “spillover effect” in which the volume of trade in non-regulated species, including threatened species, increased due to the trade ban policy.
In other words, the introduction of the ban might lead negative impacts on the conservation of other threatened species.

With 11-year online sales data, including before & after the ban, we confirmed that there were almost no illegal sales on the online market for the policy-targeted species after the ban.

Ban is an important intervention but not enough for biodiversity conservation.
