Unintended effects of Japan’s wildlife trade bans on 3 species.
Trade in these species dropped but shifted to other vulnerable species, highlighting the need for consumer research, monitoring and enforcement beyond banned species.

Trump Administration Sued for Freezing Funds That Help Protect Vulnerable Species Like Rhinos and Elephants
Environmentalists are urging the Trump administration to reverse a decision to freeze funding for important conservation work aimed at protecting iconic at-risk species, which includes anti-poaching patrols for vulnerable elephants and rhinos. The Center for Biological Diversity sent a notice of intent to sue to the administration on Wednesday over the funding cuts. “The Trump administration’s funding freeze for anti-poaching patrols and other international conservation work is maddening, heartbreaking, and very illegal,” said Sarah Uhlemann, the Center for Biological Diversity’s international program director, in a press release from the nonprofit environmental organization.

Banning threatened species trade can incrase trades of non-banned species - evdence from Japan based on the synthetic difference-in-differences approach. Great work!
Finally out ‼️📣🪲
We found #spillover effects caused by wildlife trade bans that increase the unregulated trade of threatened species.
Ban is an important intervention but not enough for biodiversity conservation.

New study! 🚨 Banning wildlife trade can increase trade in other threatened species 🚨
We find Japan’s ban on 3 species led to rise in trade of others. Bans alone aren't enough—we need consumer insights & monitoring to avoid shifting overexploitation elsewhere.

Banning wildlife trade can increase trade of other threatened species
Wildlife trade bans can encourage buyers and sellers to trade in similar species that haven’t been banned but may still be endangered.
