One more model railroading question: I could cut the mainline oval here (at the bottom) and use flex track or trimmed pieces, but would this be too tight a turn?

Picture that bottom diagonal as an S bending all the way down to the image of the turnout. Would that add a lot to this layout?

Comparing the layout to the various shunting puzzles to see how they can be set up.

Transum is only of the nice sites you can find for shunting puzzles; www.transum.org/software/shu...

People kept saying "Z scale shunting is unreliable" but at the same time I saw videos of people doing it succesfully. One path that works:

1) *new* Rokuhan track carefully wiggled together
2) Rokuhan locomotives
3) Rokuhan freight cars
4) Reasonable speeds

When it works well it's SO much fun!!!

Opinions on switches. I want analog switches on the layout for the turnouts even if they'll get JMRI'd later. There's a spot here I had to clear to get access to rail or I could mount it on the side. What type of (momentary on, 12V 1 amp) buttons/switches do you prefer? One switch per or selectable?

Model railroad layout: where it started, where it's going.

It started on the first track, then it was shunted to the second.

Where model railroading & woodworking intersect? This feels too ad hoc to be wood working. Glue this in temporarily, then screw it up from underneath. Then more frame, spray foam, finally form and foliage, then it's a mountain/waterfall/tunnel but also a handle to make picking up the layout easier.

I just went though the exact same thing! I even used SCARM but when I really started putting it together it changed quick. Oh well, really happy with how usable it turned out. Really looking forward to seeing what you do with the subject of 70s Japan.

That bridge and elevated station still needs to go in, even if a lot of the rest of it like that big building and even that mountain on the right didn't survive first contact with the railyard's initiial construction.

For a model railroad rail tunnel with two tracks, if the tracks are two different types (metal color, ties) would it look better with a Robertson-style tunnel with two arches or one shared arch like the round or square entrance to the Jarlsberg tunnel?

The EF66 started prowling with raised pantographs when it smelled the new railyard track. #modelTrains

Latest searches? "Homemade spray foam mountain molds"

Serious #modelRailroading #scaleModels #diorama question: spray foam (over support) do you want the more flexible of two options?

Getting the wiring done with "superglue bolts" to fix wires in place. Helped a lot to use the right wire because for me stranded is easier to attach to track, and the stiffness or solid core wasn't workable. Achieved model railroading milestone of dropping all the turnout wires through the holes!

You have to see the outstanding work on this model train locomotive shop. About halfway through he starts showing the inside with the roof off, and the level of detail is absolutely remarkable. youtu.be/TQXE4Db4ZxE

As soon as I wire it all up I think it will be decent budget z scale shunting. Layout puzzles!

Note the green line commute.🤔

The RR's imaginary railyard design team is back and it's official. As one said "Track Don't Do That" (bending left around the base of the waterfall & back again into the tunnel in too short a span).

So the mountain has to go... up. Parts of it, at least. Opens up some interesting options or redos.🤔

After careful consideration I've decided "track doesn't run like that" (original green line). So, it looks like the whole mountain has to come up (red arrow). Can it just be raised up more with the new track running underneath? We'll see.

You can see the difference between passenger cars and the smaller freight cars. With only so much room in this layout, freight shunting will be practical but passenger car operations much more limited.

A month later and the first model railroad railyard track is finally laid (yellow dashes). The mountain may need some demolition (blue line *or* green line) :-/

Pro-rookie tip: airfoam clay pressed into the hollow base of bedded track makes it grip the layout and makes exact positioning easier.

I read those were sold for scrap last year after people tried to save them? So they were to get ore into the ship or from the ship to the railcars?

If you want to learn more about any Z scale rolling stock like the brass ML-4000's, always take a look at the American Z Line's site. Not only nice pics but always a nice history of the prototype as well as the model's description. americanzline.com/locomotives/...

One of the amazing Z scale brass AZL Krauss Maffei ML-4000's is up for sale (again?). Brass locomotives are made by some manufacturers in low numbers compared to their plastic-bodied locomotives (although brass is not inherently better)

Remember, if you see model train rolling stock with ugly liveries there are a lot of model railroaders who want to paint custom (their own RR or one they're a fan of). You feel a lot less pressure if it was a tacky mess to begin with.

I think I may have found the right railyard layout for this model railroad layout, or close to it. Not sure I'm ready to cut the mainline again, but doesn't it need two turnouts coming into the yard and don't straight turnouts usually work better?

Look, it gets worse. I was google lensing a picture someone posted of a commuter train with a broken windshield and highlighting the text that said "Ageo Incident on March 13, 1973" and google searching it answered back "it did not happen on March 13, 1973 ... it happened on March 13, 1973."
