Labour is desperately trying to appeal to Reform supporters. In October, we asked people in the UK if they perceive a party as a "party for someone like them". Only very few people say this for both Labour and Reform. The correlation is negative. Labour is chasing an electorate that does not exist.

Next week, with the Progressive Politics Research Network, we are going to publish 8 new research briefs on the politics of housing. While housing has become a huge grievance across Europe, it is often absent from progressive parties‘ agendas. Our group of experts discusses different aspects of this

In German morning news it‘s “Mario Cuomo” running for mayor today. At 93, he‘d of course been at prime age for a US politician…

It‘s going to be a wild ride tomorrow when pundits around the globe explain to us what kind of party D66 is and why they did exactly what they have always told us their favorite strategy is

And just to emphasize it again: yes, PVV is down by a lot but the other two far-right parties are up by a lot

The last poll before the election tomorrow has the top 3 parties in the Netherlands all at 15%. Fragmentation on steroids. D66 is the big winner of the last 2 weeks. At the last election, the party that gained shortly before the election (the PVV), also gained a lot on election day. Let's see.

The success of the far right is not only measured in votes and seats but in its impact on rhetoric, policy and ideology. The fact that a (nominally) social democratic head of government with a huge majority choses to say and do this is maybe the biggest success of the far right in Europe yet.

Very excited for our 4th Progressive Politics Research Network workshop today and tomorrow at Humboldt University in Berlin. With a fabulous group of participants we will not only discuss our research but also how we can use it to inform public debate.

Now out in @cpsjournal.bsky.social. In our new article, @denis-cohen.bsky.social @thmskrr.bsky.social and I show that where local rent prices increase more, residents with lower incomes become more likely to support the radical right AfD.

I realize that I don't have a good idea of what a civil war would look like in the US today. Like with authoritarianism it is probably a much more gradual development. How do we detect it while it is happening? I am sure some smart people have thought about this.

Reading books like other forms of cultural consumption (and taste) is of course always performative. Performative does not mean it is (always) a strategic conscious decision but simply something enshrined in our behavior in search of recognition and status.

The current Labour strategy on immigration - tough rhetoric, “successful” deportations, “legitimate concerns“ - is nearly a carbon copy of what the last German government did. It led to the historically best result for the far right and the worst for the social democrats.

London stands up against far-right thugs in our streets. Notable which politicians come out in support of civil society and defense of liberal democracy. And which politicians fuel the flames of bigotry and racism. This will be the political dividing line of the next years. Time to pick a side.
