Since I've been on a "rambling about sci-fi weapons" kick, I figure I should point out the existence of electrothermal-chemical guns and how they're likely the actual future of firearms within this century

Like it's just generally accepted these things will replace most conventional guns soon-ish

The Boomers grow older, as they predicted.

And then, one day, they saw down every tree in the orchard to build their retirement cabin.

"I'm done with the orchard," they tell their kids and grandkids. "It's all yours. Enjoy!"

And now, they're annoyed when their descendants complain.

In pursuit of waging this war, the Dutch would invent the stock holding company, laying the tracks for the running train that would become capitalism. The very function and idea of the monarch as the indisputable emissary of God Almighty would be fractured from the heat of the battles.

Anyways, TL;DR on why railguns are bad and better technology will not make them viable:

- All that extra kinetic energy gets wasted on overpen, so the only advantage over normal guns is range
- Terrible barrel lifetimes make it expensive
- Missiles are just better anyways
"Railguns are the future of weapons technology, just look at the one the US Navy is building!"

The US Navy cancelled the railgun program several years ago, not because the tech wasn't there yet, but because its performance was unimpressive for the cost and conventional guns and missiles are better
