Manufactured by the Checker Motors Corporation of Kalamazoo, MI, Checker Cabs appeared in New York in the 1920s. The Checker Cab was discontinued in 1982 and the last Checker Cab in #NYC was retired in 1999. Driven by Earl Johnson, it had nearly one million miles on its odometer.

The fleet featured major improvements over the R36 fleet that preceded it. They were the first stainless steel and air-conditioned subway cars built for the "A" Division and included in-car lighting that could be maintained over third rail gaps and dead spots.

Today, R62 cars are still in service!

R62 cars were the first IRT cars to be built since the R36 fleet of the 1960s and they replaced many of the remaining R12s, R14s, and R15s. Built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan, R62 cars were also the first #NYCsubway cars to be built by a foreign manufacturer.

Due to a major fiscal crisis confronting #NYC, work stalled on the 63rd Street Tunnel shortly after this film was made. The upper level tunnel finally opened in 1989 and the lower level tunnel opened in January of 2023, when it was needed for the East Side Access Project.

Old Penn Station was sadly demolished in 1963, but public outrage at the station’s demise was a major catalyst for the historic preservation movement and the 1965 New York Landmarks Law that has helped save Grand Central Terminal and more than 30,000 other buildings from similar fates.
