My sister's all-white cat Elbereth is loafing -- face-down -- on a torn cardboard box lid sitting on top of a printer (to protect it from cat hair) at our parents' house. She loved laying there because it was warm and right in front of the front door, which also happened to be between the living room and the kitchen, so that when anyone walked in, she would stick her head out at them and demand pets. She was a queen. A drooling, derpy, oh-so-lovable queen. Elly Belly is sadly no longer with us, but we all still hold her in our hearts.

As both Tupac and Benjamin recognize, living under siege is not a relic of the past, an observation Baldwin also makes. Baldwin emphasizes this ongoing past when he recalls Emmett Till's body being found in the Tallahatchie River while considering the bodies of Black youth in rivers, like the Chattahoochee, in Atlanta. He further associates those anonymous Black dead in the Mississippi waters dredged up in the search for Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner with the Atlanta dead.
