As Jewish Londoners come together to celebrate Chanukah, we will do everything in our power to keep you safe.
Statement from the Mayor of London reads: The terrorist attack in Bondi Beach this weekend was an appalling act of antisemitic hatred. Once again, we have seen Jewish people targeted for no other reason than their faith. Today, I join millions of Londoners in mourning the innocent lives cruelly stolen, and in unequivocally condemning the heinous cowardice of the perpetrators. I know that for many in London’s Jewish communities, this weekend’s events will be deeply distressing. To hear in particular of the death of London-born Rabbi Eli, a father of five, was heartbreaking. As Jewish Londoners come together to celebrate Chanukah, I want to reassure them that we will do everything in our power to keep them safe. I have been in regular contact with the Metropolitan Police over the weekend. The police have already stepped up their presence at Chanukah events across London, and they will operate with increased visibility in Jewish communities throughout this week. Statement from the Mayor of London reads: At its heart, the Chanukah story is one of hope and resilience. Faced with tyranny, the Maccabees defended their right to practice faith. With light, they overcame darkness. Time and again, Jewish people have fought for freedoms against prejudice and persecution. Today, this fight is far from over. I’m proud London hosts a Menorah during Chanukah. Faced with darkness, I urge all Londoners to stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters. We must show allyship with our Jewish neighbours. Now more than ever, we must unite to rid society of antisemitism and defeat this hatred wherever it rears its head. London must always be a place where people of all faiths and backgrounds can live in safety and harmony - where differences are celebrated, not tolerated. Happy International Pronouns Day!

Using the right pronouns is essential in respecting people, and can help trans people feel seen.

Here’s a quick guide to pronouns.

What are pronouns? A word that stands in for a name to avoid constant repetition of that name, often this is gendered. He/him is often used by men. She/her by women, and they/them pronouns are used by many (but not all) non-binary people. Other non-binary pronouns exist such as ‘ze’, ‘sie’ and ‘co’. Some people don’t have pronouns and will use their name instead, and some people also have multiple pronouns, like she/they. Some languages don’t have gendered pronouns at all. Why is it important to respect pronouns? It’s important not to assume someone’s pronouns based on their appearance, name or job. Using the correct pronouns is essential to referring to people correctly and respectfully. Using the right pronouns will make someone feel seen. Declaring pronouns can create a safe place and avoids making assumptions. You can do this by using them in email signatures, introductions and meetings. Are pronouns “for life”? For some people, pronouns, like gender, aren’t fixed. They can change throughout their life, and sometimes multiple times. People may also use different pronouns in different spaces, depending on how comfortable they feel.

Now, more than ever, Londoners from all communities must stand together, show allyship to our Jewish friends and neighbours, and be united in our rejection of hatred.
In the wake of the heinous terrorist attack at Heaton Park Synagogue, I know many in London’s Jewish community will be feeling afraid. My thoughts are with the families of Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz at this terrible time. Places of worship should be sanctuaries and safe havens for all. No one should feel scared to attend their synagogue, church, mosque, gurdwara or temple. As we head into the weekend, there will be increased police presence in and around synagogues across the capital. Our Jewish communities must be able to live and worship free from the fear of harassment, discrimination, intimidation, or violence. The fact they cannot do so is utterly unacceptable. It is clear that there is much more to do to rid our society of the poison of antisemitism, and we must redouble our efforts to stamp out this vile hatred wherever it rears its ugly head.
