I like my humor how I like my coffee & wine: black & dry. My attempts at contextualizing culture through art & media. In creative process. Young Storytellers mentor. 2x cancer survivor.
BANKS released Goddess: Unplugged to celebrate its 10yrs & it remains such a singular work. Her lyricism was so raw & sophisticated. The album is so carnal, not just in its crystalline sexuality, but it's so visceral. She has a deep lust for introspection & admission open.spotify.com/album/7yHgjX...

Jacob Collier's acuity is cosmic. I love how he likens the flow of creativity to particles colliding & that creative inspiration doesn't need new atoms, just new formulas for collision. He touches on the idea that "being reasonable" kills creativity & music gave him access to the unreasonable.

Ella Purnell toplined three of 2024’s coolest tv shows with two-syllable titles and I think that’s really fucking neat.

1. Fallout
2. Arcane
3. Sweetpea

Attended the premiere of THE FIRE INSIDE: a sturdy debut feature from Rachel Morrison. Her intimate framing is its usual match for Jenkins’ flair for interiority. Brian Tyree Henry is a wellspring of emotional depth. Ryan Destiny boasts mighty fists of grit and grace. Olunike Adeliyi is a standout.

While I’m going to remain salty about not being able to watch IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE in a packed theater, very cool of the #CriticsChoiceAwards to recognize what I think is one of the most fun viewing experiences this year. I hope Greg Jardin & co. continue to get some love as more folks find this film.

Still thinking about Joan Chen in Dìdi. You can feel the emotional turbulence that gently boils beneath her delicate and solemn demeanor. She’s indelible. And for my money, her supporting actress nomination at the Oscars should be a lock.

The YouTube obsession with identifying (or really, inflicting the identification) of “easter eggs” on movies and TV shows has mauled what’s left of cultural criticism. Half the time, the so-called “easter eggs” are just examples of foreshadowing and narrative depth.

Yes, I’m religious. I believe in the holy trinity.

Still patiently, gently waiting for Shatara Michelle Ford’s next film. I still think about how intimately and sharply Test Pattern observed such a specifically harrowing experience. A film still so underseen. It’s streaming on Prime right now.

We just watched Merry Gentlemen on Netflix and I’m happy to report that THEE Maxwell Caulfield is still gorgeous and fine as hell, and still strutting around with all the swagger.

For all the writers out there, Quinta Brunson shares a story rule for writing ensemble characters she picked up from Larry Wilmore. It's a genius way to examine characterization. [put a $5 bill on the floor] "Every single character should pick it up differently & do something different with it."

I really bop to the chorus of System Of A Down’s B.Y.O.B. like I’m listening to Brandy or TLC. That main riff is so groovy. lol

Randomly remembering how much of a comfort movie Housesitter was for me when I was a kid, even though I was probably too young for it at the time. I think it’d be so fun to see Goldie Hawn as a guest star on Only Murders in the Building. Her and Steve had/have such a fun dynamic.

I don’t get media needing to have “likable” characters for it to be good. I just want characters to be interesting & dimensional, & I need to get their motivations. Or am I/others equating likability w/ being morally good? I tend to prefer gray characters. That emotional arc is far more compelling.

Elmiene’s Tiny Desk is the perfect balm needed to wrap up the week. This man has the most nectarous voice that sweetens any hook he sleekly sings. youtube.com/watch?v=mV5U...

I‘ve been obsessed w/ so many aspects of Greg Jardin’s #ItsWhatsInside. The double tracking of actor pairs when in red-light mode is a cool detail of sound design. The clever visual of flashbacks is a masterclass in exposition & editing. The RGB motif slickly maintains lucidity amid chaos. #Netflix

Kitty Green is SO good at creating an unabating, immersive atmosphere of foreboding. She knows she doesn’t need to overindulge the audience, and relies on the ingrained misogyny endemic & systemic to society that allows viewers to infer what happens without explicitly showing it.

Upon my FAIR PLAY rewatch, Chloe Domont's precise direction is the soil from which she harvests a bounty. Sleek cinematography. An elevating score. Thickening tension. Searing performances that I find so scrum-diddly-umptious. This would be a great double feature w/ Kitty Green’s THE ASSISTANT.

It'll always tickle me when the love interest from the romantic subplot is revealed to be the child of a character in the main story. I don't care how tattered and worn of a plot twist it is, it's like a cozy, knit sweater to me. I'll gasp and giggle every time.

Ha, HOLY SHIT Brian Duffield’s NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU is a fucking gas! Confounding, thrilling, and tense. Kaitlyn Dever is tremendous. Like an infectious pop beat over bleak lyrics, it’s a certified banger. I’m peeved because that sound design and score would’ve smashed in a theater.

A THOUSAND AND ONE is streaming on Prime Video. One of the great performances this year from Teyana Taylor, in A.V. Rockwell's expansive, emotionally rich chronicle of New York and the forces, political and personal, that shape the lives and dreams of one long-enduring family.

Given all the great acclaim, I'm a bit puzzled as to why there's been no acquisition news for Azazel Jacobs' HIS THREE DAUGHTERS, but I'm going to need Bleeker Street, Sony Pictures Classics, or someone to snatch this one up so I can watch it.
