Ella Purnell toplined three of 2024’s coolest tv shows with two-syllable titles and I think that’s really fucking neat.

1. Fallout
2. Arcane
3. Sweetpea

Attended the premiere of THE FIRE INSIDE: a sturdy debut feature from Rachel Morrison. Her intimate framing is its usual match for Jenkins’ flair for interiority. Brian Tyree Henry is a wellspring of emotional depth. Ryan Destiny boasts mighty fists of grit and grace. Olunike Adeliyi is a standout.

While I’m going to remain salty about not being able to watch IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE in a packed theater, very cool of the #CriticsChoiceAwards to recognize what I think is one of the most fun viewing experiences this year. I hope Greg Jardin & co. continue to get some love as more folks find this film.

Still thinking about Joan Chen in Dìdi. You can feel the emotional turbulence that gently boils beneath her delicate and solemn demeanor. She’s indelible. And for my money, her supporting actress nomination at the Oscars should be a lock.

Still patiently, gently waiting for Shatara Michelle Ford’s next film. I still think about how intimately and sharply Test Pattern observed such a specifically harrowing experience. A film still so underseen. It’s streaming on Prime right now.

We just watched Merry Gentlemen on Netflix and I’m happy to report that THEE Maxwell Caulfield is still gorgeous and fine as hell, and still strutting around with all the swagger.

For all the writers out there, Quinta Brunson shares a story rule for writing ensemble characters she picked up from Larry Wilmore. It's a genius way to examine characterization. [put a $5 bill on the floor] "Every single character should pick it up differently & do something different with it."

I‘ve been obsessed w/ so many aspects of Greg Jardin’s #ItsWhatsInside. The double tracking of actor pairs when in red-light mode is a cool detail of sound design. The clever visual of flashbacks is a masterclass in exposition & editing. The RGB motif slickly maintains lucidity amid chaos. #Netflix
