Absolutely top-tier Sagawa. He's my favorite example of the kind of character that really makes LaD special to me. The series is riddled with shithead thugs and morally bankrupt middlemen that are rendered with way more layered, compassionate, thoughtful storytelling than was structurally necessary.

A lot of the praise for bravely default came from people who hadn't played a turn-based RPG since the PS1, or hadn't ever, which is part of it. But also, without having them directly spoon-fed to them, people will just straight up miss most of a game's mechanics when they play it.
