Grant was stalled outside Petersburg, Sherman was stalled outside Atlanta, and it seemed very possible McClellan would win the election and negotiate the south’s independence. Only in hindsight does the war seem almost won in summer 1864.

Also because you can be okay with a close run clusterfuck of a battle, instead of having to redo it until you wipe the map because you’re worried about scaling becoming insurmountable five battles later.

This dynamic is what keeps me going back to Grand Tactician: Civil War, because while it’s kind of a glorious mess, at least your battles have consequences.
