As a writer I find this comforting. We write to have conversations with people in other times and places. Books are carriers of legacy. Books are the way the dead talk to the living.
You're not "late to the party" when you enjoy an old book for the first time. Books don't have an RSVP deadline. The party started long ago, and guests show up when they're meant to.

Robert picked a second batch of apples off our Granny Smith tree yesterday. She’s a fierce tree living at 4,000 feet in snow & ice, deer and squirrels nibbling at her leaves & bark. This year she gave us the most apples ever! Be like Granny and stand strong; raise your voice and tell your stories 💜🍏

What I am telling writers in my flock today: Writing is a subversive act. Writers are resistors. Use your pen, lift your voice, tell your story, don’t give up. Resist.

A final thought on pulpit supply: Being new to this, the term has been a little jarring. Pulpit supply sounds more like an object, like tissues or a water bottle stored behind the pulpit. I’d like to propose the term be retired for something more encouraging, and more personal. #elca
I kind of like “guest shepherd” !
I asked Claude.ai to come up with a few less impersonal titles: Guest preaching ministry, Sunday morning companion,
Worship support partner,
Pastoral presence, Sabbath fellowship minister,
Guest shepherd,
Interim worship guide,
Sunday morning associate,
Temporary faith companion

Okay Lutherans (and maybe other high church humans). I’ve been preaching every other month at my ELCA church in the mountains and I’ve just found out I am considered “pulpit supply.” Oy. Way to make a girl feel appreciated. Please fill me in. Why the term? Where does it come from?! #lutheran #elca

Welcome to my corner of the woods! Incense cedars, Douglas firs, ponderosa pines and more are our “landscaping” in CA on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevadas, in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the US. We have a wildlife rehabber in the house and things get a little crazy here.

As a fill-in for our pastor using up some vacation days, I preached about the widow with the two mites last Sunday, used this Bonhoeffer quote, and bashed Christian nationalism. People said thank you #hope #elca

I read, write, teach a lot—mostly on Zoom. I live in the mountains and it can be isolating. But then there’s the backyard
