Did you know that fiber optic cables can be used to detect earthquakes? Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) uses fiber optic cables connected to an instrument that sends pulses of light through the cable, detecting strain from environmental disturbances.

So long Gaia. Possibly the most amazing project I have worked on. This will be the cornerstone of stellar and Milky Way astronomy for decades to come and results have and will be useful to other branches of astronomy.
Gaia has been with us at the Institute of Astronomy for as long as some of us can remember, so its rather sad to see it being retired. But it has been amazingly successful, observing well over a billion stars! www.cam.ac.uk/research/new...

I just donated to the Watch Duty app. It has been invaluable over the past two days. It’s only $25 a year for an annual subscription, which is basically free considering what you get from it. Please donate.
The CEO of Watch Duty used his skills as a software engineer to build the app to amplify fire safety information as a public service: “Techies are obsessed with going to Mars and inventing an AGI robot to do art. But I’m obsessed with time and life.” sfstandard.com/2025/01/09/w...
