What ideas, David? The Reaganomics that made the current moment inevitable? The idea that neofeudalism was good actually? The idea that a husband should be allowed to rape his wife? That AIDS was God's punishment for being gay? What ideas did you "earnestly" care about? This dichotomy is false.
When David Brooks joined the conservative movement in the 1980s, there were two types of people: those who cared earnestly about ideas, and those who wanted only to shock the left. The reactionary fringe has won, Brooks writes.
