When I see smiling faces in public spaces, I see people ready to breathe a de*dly & disabling virus into #immunocompromised people’s faces.

How to be an ally to disabled / #immunocompromised people:

Wear a mask in public

Don’t minimize the harms of COVID to chronically ill ppl

Don’t minimize harms of COVID to yourself / family / friends

Don’t refer to COVID in the past tense (e.g don’t say “during COVID” if u mean “during lockdown”)

You can check off most boxes if you wear a mask in public

By wearing a mask in public, you show that you don’t believe “COVID is over”

Also showing that you believe that COVID can harm & cause long term / permanent disability (LongCOVID)

You’re also protecting disabled / immunocompromised people

Many ppl have dealt with some form of abandonment / betrayal in their lives

Now, magnify this by a few billion

Disabled & #immunocompromised people been abandoned by the gov’t, our society, our community / communities & those closest to us

Please wear a mask in public if you want to be an ally

This is why respirator masks should be mandatory for both visitors & staff in hospitals

It would help protect EVERYONE as the MMR vaccine doesn’t offer perfect protection

Layers work best = 😷 + 💉 + clean air (HEPA air purifiers)

There are measles outbreaks all over 🇨🇦 and 🇺🇸

We unite with survivors with a demand for real accountability.
We demand governments, employers, institutions, and law enforcement stop protecting abusers and start protecting survivors. We demand action, not apologies.

If there is even a question mark over the role of infectious aerosol, at close range or otherwise…

#Respie at a minimum.

I’m just gonna say it.

The lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic have taught us this. People generate and inhale infectious aerosol when breathing, speaking, singing and shouting.

So every HCW should use proper respiratory protection when caring for a patient

Did you know that one of the early symptoms of Ebola virus disease is a sore throat?

Hmmmm?

I wonder what that might mean?

This is my worst fear. My immunity for measles has waned and my doctors have told me I can not take the MMR. I am immune suppressed. It's scary bc it's so contagious.

Also even if you have help it doesn't last forever

And people promise help and don't follow through all the time
People always tell me that I should have more support.

That if my level of function was really “that bad” I would have help.

Please believe me when I tell you help doesn’t magically appear when you become disabled.

Unless you’re rich or have family support, you’re on your own.

Being chronically ill and disabled means getting real comfortable at being the only person capable of being your own hero.

It’s lonely.
It’s demeaning.
It’s exhausting.

And there’s literally no other option. You take care of yourself the best you can or you die. There’s no hero coming.

When I got sick, everyone disappeared. I've been "mom" to all my friends all my life. Then the moment I need support, they're all gone. It's been 20yrs & I'm my only advocate.

It is so hard to ask for help, especially when you’re disabled & chronically ill.

When you’ve spent most of your life being treated as “less than” or a drain, you worry anyone you ask for help will judge you.

It takes a surprising amount of courage, so the best thing you can do is be kind

So every time, every place you wear a mask helps normalize mask wearing, which keeps spaces safer for everyone. It’s a virtuous circle.

Sci fi / horror conventions are requiring masks in 2025 but disability related conferences continue to refuse to consider masks & some even refuse to have virtual options

If you refuse to accommodate #immunocompromised people, you’re not as “inclusive” / “accessible” as you think you are
