unreal. just so good. i had the privilege of reading an earlier draft, but i always find new fascinating bits to latch onto harder, like this perfect metaphor of rewinding a cassette. #ficrec
He squirmed with discomfort. Too long sitting crooked. He had to straighten up, face the front, stretch out his legs. Nothing but the dash between him and the road. It unspooled from the horizon in an infinite ribbon, fed under the tyres, trailed behind. He imagined hitting pause, hitting rewind, throwing his life into reverse. Back to the city, back to the house. Taking his guitar out of the cabinet where it rested case to case against Ye Baiyi’s. Toes lined up at the edge of the pool while he reached into the air with uncanny clairvoyance, all those sodden papers taking flight, a startled unfluttering back into the folder, which he’d catch in mid air, intact, miraculous. He’d put it safely back into alphabetical order, rearrange the downstairs room all squared and straight. Ye Baiyi would fall asleep on his bed. He’d unpack his bag. Ye Baiyi would wake up. They’d swim themselves back to strangers, unmeet, he’d lock himself inside. A whole summer of Tuesdays watching him until he stopped coming, then further back, he’d unhide from his top shelf with the quilt and the magazines while an intruder showed himself out. He’d be safe in his own home again. He’d count the lines in the wood grain backwards until he reached zero, until he was hungered for, until he was needed. He'd move house. Many times. Grow younger, more desirable. He'd unsign a paper in exchange for his name. He’d keep rewinding until he found the point where everything had gone wrong. There had to be a moment before it all broke apart, or at least before it was irreparable. How far would he have to go. How long was a tape.

note for the comprehension-poor: there IS fascist organizing actively happening happening in fandom, and it is happening in plain sight! so hunting around in common long-standing romance tropes that have existed literally since ancient times (love changes a ~monster~) to "prove" that fanfiction (a niche subculture even within overall fandom) is some kind of meaningful origin point for the fascism that is gripping the entire fucking planet, seems to me to be - at best - wasted time, and at worst extra ammunition FOR fascists, who are typically not super enthused about women and queer people expressing sexual desire, especially non-normative desires like sex with elves. in short, get a grip

Ga-on reels back. Whatever face he makes, it makes Yo-han’s falter for a moment. Then it hardens again. He looks down at a tray of watches like it’s suddenly taken all his interest. Like Ga-on isn’t there anymore, doesn’t concern him. It’s cold, on one hand. Hurtful. And on the other hand it’s one of the most blatantly pathetic things Ga-on’s ever seen anyone do.

“Mm,” Yo-han says, noncommittally. He's off somewhere. In the weeds, the mist. The past, maybe. Hopefully not. “Sleep here,” Ga-on says. “But in the bed. I'll come wake you up before it's time to eat.” “Is that a command?” Yo-han drawls. “If it is, will you follow it?” Yo-han rolls his eyes. But Ga-on finds him under the covers later, stripped out of his shirt. Curled around Ga-on's pillow. Face looking like an angel’s would, at least as far as Ga-on knows. His vague understanding of angels was mostly formed by television, but Elijah did tell him once that Satan was an angel: one of the first, the most beautiful. The one with the furthest to fall. If you hear that, the story starts sounding sad.

“It was hard to find guys to have sex with in university,” Ga-on says. “People do make all kinds of automatic assumptions.” Yo-han rolls abruptly onto his back. “Guys,” he says, through his teeth. Ga-on used the plural casually; this is pointed. Ga-on smiles at it. “Oh,” Ga-on says. “Background checks weren't so good after all, huh? You missed that?” Yo-han is incriminatingly silent. “You probably found my girlfriends’ names,” Ga-on muses. “I usually didn't fuck guys more than once. Because I guess I look—” “Like a floppy-eared little rabbit who should like to beg,” Yo-han bites out. Ga-on laughs. “Yeah,” he says. “Like that.” Yo-han frowns. Then he's quiet for a bit. His eyes rise towards the ceiling. Maybe he's thinking about the time they tried this the other way. Ga-on had ignorantly joked about a spanking, been game enough to have his bluff called, but Yo-han only got as far as sliding his belt off and folding it in half before he'd made a face like he was going to throw up. “You should take a nap,” Ga-on says. “I'm going to start dinner in a little while.”

“I'm calling you childish,” Ga-on grins. “Watch it,” Yo-han warns. It's… incredibly cute. “Is there anything <i>you</i> want to cook together?” Ga-on says, suddenly. “I don't taste food,” Yo-han scoffs, like Ga-on is being a big idiot. “That's not what I asked,” Ga-on says. “Pointless,” Yo-han says. He waves the idea away, one quick imperious sweep of his hand, like a prince. “Okay,” Ga-on says. “If you don't want to answer now, we can revisit it later.” Yo-han makes a skeptical noise in his throat. But his throat bobs, like the noise got stuck in it, somehow. Once, twice, it goes up and down. His eyes linger on Ga-on, testing it out, and then they slide away with revealing aloofness. Ga-on thinks fondly about reaching over and ruffling his hair, making him mad, madder, but then doesn't do it. It's too early in the day to start driving him really crazy.
