Labour should have opposed Jeremy Hunt’s 4% National Insurance cuts as unaffordable and then reversed them when in power. It was clear to everyone they were unaffordable and Labour’s mistake was to pretend they were and to vote for them.

I think people often forget that council tax is something people pay out of their taxed income and has become a significant sum. Above inflation increases year on year to a tax which is not related to ability to pay are beginning to have a real impact on affordability.

People voted in a Labour government by a landslide because they wanted something meaningful to change. Labour has, ever since securing that win, done everything in its power to signal it won't change anything very much.

Isn’t part of the problem that we could have many different forms of Brexit including May’s, but the govt opted for the hardest and most damaging form, which Labour supported and voted for.

Despite the triple lock the state pension is less than half the minimum wage and about to be taxed. The gov needs to be encouraging much higher rates of pension saving which is difficult in a cost of living crisis.

I've been out canvassing quite a lot in London lately. Labour's vote has absolutely evaporated.... it is quite extraordinary to go to places where Labour were on 50-60% of the vote at the last locals and find nobody, or virtually nobody, supporting them.

This is magical thinking disconnected from reality. Prices are 20% higher than 3 years ago. This year 26% average increase in water bills, above inflation increase in council tax, average rent up 7% and now you propose new taxes and a freeze in tax thresholds which will hit the poorest hardest.

I simply do not understand how the govt can simultaneously believe (1) they don’t have enough political capital to breach the manifesto on tax and (2) they have enough to political capital to pick an unwinnable fight with their own MPs on immigration.
