I've taken on a side quest if anyone can help? I'm looking for as much information on, or a copy of, an adaptation of Somehow Good (De Morgan, 1908) that was recorded as a silent movie in 1927. Any help would be very much appreciated! #SomehowGood #SilentMovie #PhDSky #DeMorgan

Christmas Cracker joke:

Why does Edmund Burke put a small citrus fruit at the top of his Christmas tree?

Because he wants his decorations to be sublime!

Taking a break from online research to spend the afternoon starting on Emile Zola's L'Assomoir, recommended by my supervisor due to its relevance to De Morgan's writing on class and alcohol. Honoured to also be playing pillow to the dog.

At the end of my first semester as a PhD student, it's also a year today since I graduated with my MA! #PhDSky

I had my final supervision meeting of the year yesterday & received feedback on my first writing submission. Feeling super enthused & confident in what I'm doing now and that I'm on the right tracks with everything, even if writing about alcohol & its environments is a tad glum at Christmas! #PhDSky

Attending the @nationalarchives.gov.uk.web.brid.gy 'Talking Records: Pollution in the Archive' online session this afternoon. It's already given me a new way of thinking about my research texts and how to consider industrial perpetrations in urban and rural environments.

Shut Up and Write session two today with @leedsunilibraries.bsky.social and I smashed out another 1,600 words of drafting for what could well be its own chapter in my thesis. What a great session! #PhDSky #PhDStudent

I attended my first Shut Up and Write session today and got 1,000 words down as a very rough beginning of a first draft on representations of alcohol, where it is consumed, and its impact on social groups in De Morgan's novels, starting with Uncle Bob in 'It Never Can Happen Again'.

"at least in the country we are still Shakespearian. These Londoners get more intelligible every year [..] defilers of the English language" - William De Morgan is pure gold.

Girl with Jug of Ale and Pipes (James Campbell, 1856) at @walkerartgallery.bsky.social was giving Alice-for-Short (William De Morgan, 1907) vibes during my visit this morning. Only, I don't think Alice will have been quite so well turned out.

I've created a Substack to document my journey & research as a PGR. If you're interested in the Pre-Raphs or De Morgan, or just want to nose, please subscribe for regular updates. I'll be using it to reflect and muse on whatever I happen to discover. exploringdemorgan.substack.com/p/exploring-...
