ICE is pepper spraying toddlers.

This one-year-old was in her car seat, inside the car, with her parents, in a parking lot. They were out buying groceries. Then ICE confronted them, and arrested a bunch of American citizens.

Watch this child cry. Imagine it's your child.

The real Jim Watson, in all his complexity. Brilliance and bigotry, he contained multitudes.
Okay, here are some first reflections on Watson.
Watson's life is a tragedy, really of Shakespearean proportions. He did not, as most bios will tell you, do one great thing when he was young and then collect laurels for it for the next 60 years. His career arc was unlike any in science.

People have long wondered if dinosaurs really would've thrived if not for the asteroid that killed them. Two new studies, involving paleontologists @stevebrusatte.bsky.social and Lindsay Zanno, dig further into that question.

Jim Watson, from the South Side of Chicago. Met him a bunch of times at our Alma Mater UChicago. How tragic that such a brilliant and accomplished mind will have to be remembered the way he’ll be remembered.

Shapiro vs. Vance 2028, bring it on.
Shapiro: He rose to some prominence by writing a book about growing up in Appalachia, where there are a whole lot of people who get SNAP. He made millions of dollars off telling their stories, and then he turned his damn back on those very people he likes to write about and claim as his own.

No remorse & no regret because nothing is ever your fault

What do we know about the last surviving dinosaurs, living right before the asteroid? And is Nanotyrannus a tiny tyrannosaur species or juvenile T. rex?

Could we eat dinosaur meat?

And I don't mean chicken or turkey. But T. rex or Brontosaurus!

My friends @iflscience.com asked me this fun question, and here's what I think:

I think most normal people would agree it's sadistic for armed men to barge into a daycare and arrest a teacher.

Even if she is an illegal immigrant (which she's not).

The children are so traumatized that the daycare is closed for the week.

Happy publication day to @davehone.bsky.social & @markwitton.bsky.social

If you want to encounter the real Spinosaurus, and understand what we know and don’t know about it, read this book!
Publication day! The Spinosaur Tales with @markwitton.bsky.social is officially out today! I'll be going a much longer and more detailed thread later on as today is rather manic while I'm hosting 400 school kids to my uni campus, but I wanted to get this early post out.

Chicago, 7am. Children have just arrived at daycare.

Armed ICE agents storm the classroom, grab a teacher, drag her outside, arrest her.

As the children watch. As she screams that she's in the US legally, tries to show her papers. All without a warrant.

This is fascism.

Trump's response to Republican losses in yesterday's elections is...
...making people show ID when buying groceries.
Trump: "It's time for Republicans to do what they have to do and that's terminate the filibuster ... we should start tonight with 'the country's open, congratulations,' then we should pass voted ID, we should pass no mail in voting ... you go to a grocery store, you have to give ID."

Duck-billed dinosaurs are often found with gruesome, shattered, deformed tails.

Did the injuries happen during mating?

Maybe! A provocative new study from @fbertpaleo.bsky.social & team. My thoughts for @cnn.com

Well how about that? Many Americans don't actually want a crazy, chaotic, corrupt government of wannabee fascist dictators. And they'll vote accordingly.
A good night for America, good night for democracy.

Dayanne Figueroa is an American citizen. She was driving to work in Chicago when a speeding vehicle driven by ICE randomly crashed into her.

The masked ICE agents dragged her from her car. Shackled and detained her. They had no warrant, she committed no crime.

This is fascism.
As bystanders yelled, “You hit her! We have it on video!” agents ignored the crowd and forced Dayanne Figueroa into a red minivan and drove away.
Her car was left behind in the middle of the road, her coffee still in the cup holder, and her keys in plain view.

Of course, now almost totally superseded and some of it proven wrong by later research from many colleagues. But I hope it was a useful waypoint.
