1933: After years of street violence and abductions, militarized police answerable only to Hitler smash the windows of Jewish-owned shops in Braunschweig, leading a local to call out her pro-Nazi mom.

Mom's response? "Oh, it wasn't the Nazis, just some "dumb kids."

Been thinking lots about Victor Klemperer watching the newly-elected Nazis tear down the pillars of German democracy in 1933 and then later writing in his diary "it's astounding how easily everything collapses."

On June 6th 1944, Uncle Les was one of the first combatants to approach Juno Beach. This 2011 pic is from the last time we talked.

I asked Les and other veterans how we should honour them. They all said the same thing – often in these exact words:

“Don’t fuck it up.”

I don’t intend to forget.

I mean "let's not talk about my Nazi phase and stick to rockets" is a time honored American tradition by now
David Pogue: “I’m wondering what your thought is on the ban on foreign students, the proposal. I mean, you were one of those kids, right?”
Elon Musk: “Yeah. I mean, I think we wanna stick to, you know, the subject of the day, which is, like, spaceships, as opposed to, you know, presidential policy"

I've facilitated numerous "takedown requests" from international students studying in Canada. Their families back home get threats from government agents who somehow know all about what their child is posting in history class. The students then tell me "you're so lucky it's not like that over here."
The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.

International Women's Day, 1917: Russian women march against their war-mad dictator, who then ordered the army to shoot them.

No guns. No child care even. But their bravery so shamed the army that the soldiers deposed the Russian dictator that had led them all into a foolish war.
