Very sorry to hear that Rosemary Thorp has passed away. She was a wonderful mentor and a top scholar. Her economic history of Peru (with Geoffrey Bertram) is one of the most important works of Peruvian history written to date. She will be missed.

Today is the official UK publication day for Silicon Empires! I'm excited to have it out and hear what people think.
There's an enormous amount happening every day in AI, and it's difficult to gain a stable perspective. I wrote the book to try and get some secure hold on that constant flux. 🧵

Germany, EU fiscal rules and the illusion of objectivity
German defence spending risks breaking EU fiscal rules. But while the rules are presented as a technical calculation, they are less objective than it appears.

Oil, shipping, tariffs: We are back in a world of cost shocks.
Our AI/LLM analysis of 138,962 corporate earnings calls shows how economy-wide cost shocks let large firms raise prices & increase profits—triggering sellers' inflation. 🧵

Economics obscures or is oblivious to the politics embedded in theorization itself. In this book, @devikadutt.bsky.social, @cacrisalves.bsky.social, @surbhikesar.bsky.social & @ingridhk.bsky.social return political questions to the heart of economic theorizing.
