Warum klingen Songs zunehmend gleich?
Mit einem Mix aus Politischer Ökonomie und Kulturkritik der Frankfurter Schule sind Niklas Kullick @mpifg.bsky.social und @johannespetry.bsky.social dieser Frage nachgegangen.

Based on our recent article in @finandsoc.bsky.social, we wrote a piece for @theconversation.com titled 'from art to assets' on how music does indeed sound all the same nowadays - and the role of streaming platforms in this process 😎

From art form to asset: our study found popular songs are becoming more generic
It’s largely down to the demands of streaming services.

Reviving Adorno's critique of the standardization of music, our article of the week reads streaming as a turn from Fordist production to financialized platforms where music is assetized and homogenized.

Super interesting visit to the Bundesbank money museum. Surprisingly detailed and well designed exhibits on asset purchases, transmission mechanisms, and financial plumbing. including a note that monetary policy is political! Can't escape the folk story of money emerging from barter though.

Check out this interesting new edited book! I was honored to be invited to write the afterword, and used the space to discuss the theoretical & political stakes involved in attempts to merge the international financial subordination (IFS) + financial statecraft + comparative capitalism literatures.🧵
We are very happy to announce the publication of our edited volume ‘State, Capitalism & Finance in Emerging Markets: Between Subordination and Statecraft’ (/w Andreas Nölke) with @brisunipress.bsky.social! 🥳
