Americans don’t usually use them (and if you asked for a kettle here no one would understand that you meant an electric water boiler). We would not expect a household or rental to have one. Generally people just microwave the water.

I can read a lot faster than I can listen to someone talking out the words, so an audiobook feels very plodding and annoying to me. Same reason I don’t listen to podcasts, just give me a transcript.
