The American scientific enterprise is the envy of many around the world. The deliberate butchering of it is hard to comprehend. 🧪
Staff members at the US National Science Foundation (NSF) were told on 30 April to “stop awarding all funding actions until further notice,” according to an email seen by Nature.

Exclusive: NSF stops awarding new grants and funding existing ones
US science funder also plans to screen grant applications for compliance with ‘agency priorities’.

TODAY is the day. If you live in Wisconsin go vote. If you don’t live in Wisconsin, make sure every badger you know makes it to the polls by 8pm!

IL Gov. Pritzker is one of the great leaders of our time. You can watch his full IL budget address here. If you forward to the 26 minute mark, you can watch as he shifts to a dire warning about the direction our country is taking, but also words of hope. We should all take heed.

Live footage of the average NIH-funding academic as we cycle between maybe no longer having a job and court rulings allow NIH to resume evaluating and funding grants.
I do not recommend this life style, it sucks
Most of us just want to do important science unpeturbed.

Beyond overhead, talk about why grant amounts are large- what is in those budgets - almost always the biggest budget item are salary & benefits of staff & students- the people living in our communities, paying taxes, renting/buying homes, carpooling kids to school.

Research infrastructure helps build the middle class... and is especially crucial in rural communities (particularly when university infrastructure includes training hospitals, clinics, and other medical services).

Children's hospitals, rural health clinics, transformative research, rare genetic diseases, clinical trials- NIH-funding has been CRUCIAL to ALL OF THESE.

From cancers to asthma to diabetes to heart disease to Alzheimer's to tooth decay, NIH-funded research has advanced, improved, & accelerated treatment.

While industry was getting folks INTENTIONALLY HOOKED ON OPIOIDS, health scientists were working through nights & weekends to make people safer.

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
