ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS

We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years.

GRFP is out. They funded half as many students as in recent years. Not a single student from a single Cal State school got an award. We are discouraging geniuses with this decision.

So in summary, all of these losses are horrible and heartbreaking. MARC was clearly in the cross fires for its URM focus. But I, at least, never imagined the extent to which they’d be shredding the entire scientific training pipeline 💔

PREP was a post-baccalaureate program, helping students who want to go to grad school but didn’t get enough opportunity to do research during undergrad, whether bc they didn’t have opportunities locally, they had to work instead, they didn’t know that undergrad research existed, or any other reason

I have learned that the directors of ALL: PREP, IMSD, and IRACDA programs across the country have received similar cancelation notices. This follows previous cancellations of MARC and URISE programs. This further dismantles the mechanisms that enable scientific training opportunities for SO MANY.
You want to know the best way to show thanks for chairing a study section? Early the next morning sent them a termination notice for their PREP training grant.
Just completed day 2 of chairing a NIH study section. Brain is tired after intently listening and leading discussions of ~40 apps. So fulfilling to hear the passion people have for others' science, and heartwarming to see so many people who care about the training and environment of others 🫶 (299!)

Today was yet another sad day for science. All U-RISE training programs, including the one at SJSU, got stop work orders. We've had a version of this program at SJSU for 30+ yrs. Devastating for the students who got their stipends & tuition pulled w no notice & for the future of science 🧪 1/

Today's San Jose Mercury News has my Letter to the Editor about the disastrous proposed cuts to NIH. The ramifications are hard to summarize in <150 words, but here's my attempt.
