Historically, the state with the most Jim Crow laws was California. Altadena became a Black community due to redlining. Racial covenants kept Black people out of so many LA County neighborhoods. LA County also had its share of sundown towns.

Im reading a novelization of Hattie McDaniels, and I was shocked at all the references to White Only establishments and to racist housing covenants. The schools definitely did not teach about Jim Crow in CA when I was in school there
