U.S. Immigration laws nearly broke us. Curaçao put us back together. Timing to leave U.S. turned out to be perfect. 🍋→🍹 Digital marketing strategist, nonprofit exec, writer, and caregiver.

Relocating outside the U.S. to wait out my husband’s 10 year immigration bar to reentry was the hardest decision, esp bc we’re caregivers to my elderly parents. In order to move, I had to get them on board bc there i couldn’t just abandon them when they need us most. It was terrifying for them.1/
Happy New Year from Curacao! Here’s my reminder to all who need it that we can’t have light without the dark. Here’s to less stormy days ahead!

Never knew abt 10 years in jail for ignoring a deportation order. We consulted over a dozen immigration lawyers + NO ONE mentioned this, even if rarely used! Immigration lawyers should have an ethical obligation to tell you facts like this. Instead they take your money + fill you with false hope. 😡
The email from a U.S. immigration officer presented Kelly and Yerson Vargas with a stark choice: accept deportation to their native Colombia or risk being charged with a crime and separated from their 6-year-old daughter, Maria Paola.

No one will see this but I have to say it out loud: Bc of inhumane immigration laws, my then-undocumented husband and I fled the U.S. two years ago just to live a normal life together without fear. We relocated to Curacao, which finally feels like home. We live it! Freedom is a great thing. But….

🚨⚖️📚Sen. Adam Schiff warns that Trump is preparing for war with Venezuela without congressional approval. He joins Sens. Kaine and Paul to introduce a War Powers Resolution, citing a massive U.S. military buildup near Venezuela and urging Congress to block unauthorized hostilities.

Relieved we left Curacao temporarily bc of our anxieties about U.S./Venezuela conflict and risk of being trapped near a potential war zone. Everyone said we were overreacting. Well, just now, the Dutch gov’t has raised security concerns for the ABC islands: www.curacaochronicle.com/post/main/du...

We lived like this for years, planning “what ifs” - what if he gets detained? What if he suddenly can’t return to our home for 10 years? What happens to my elderly parents if we have to relocate? Anxiety was off the rails.
Now that kids are back in school, mixed-status families have to prepare for the worst: what if ICE arrests dad or mom while the kids are at school? What happens if children arrive home and no one is there?

Deportation affects all of us, not just immigrants.

As the new school year begins, mixed immigration status families face heightened fears about ICE enforcement near schools, creating anxiety that extends far beyond the classroom.

I think it’s high time we take back the national narrative. For centuries Americans of all races, genders, religions, and abilities have worked to create a more perfect union, and we should shout from the rooftops that WE are America. Not these idiot white supremacist authoritarians.

Hate it when people call out ICE abuse but still say “illegals.” My husband was a PERSON without papers. He was an undocumented PERSON. No one’s existence is illegal. “Illegals” is dehumanizing and says they don’t belong. It’s othering. Words matter.

Here’s a glimpse of the types of post to warn of ICE’s presence in the area. Just horrifying. More like Nazi Germany than the land of the free! They’re literally being hunted and kidnapped. I am ashamed to be associated with America. 😭 😡

I’m shocked at how often I hear Russian propaganda repeated in Curacao. 99.9% of the time it’s a non-American (usually Dutch, not Curacaoan) spewing B.S. + they get defensive when I correct their facts. Reading about spread of disinfo is so different than hearing it out loud, let me tell you. 🤦‍♀️ 😮

Tip to politicians and pundits: When your only recourse is to say “vote them out,” it doesn’t make me feel better. Look at what’s happened in just 6 months. Am I supposed to feel relieved that we have to wait another year and a half? 🙈

Boy, that took too long to sink in. Now we have the potential terrorist attacks, real or staged, that he can use to justify suspension of Habeas Corpus and due process. Martial law just got a step or two closer.

Even at the time of the election, I thought something was wrong with these results. Good for my neighboring county that they’re demanding a recount, even just for the record.
Did Rockland County, N.Y.’s incorrect vote total occur nationwide? Kamala Harris received 0 votes. Hundreds of ballots for Kirsten Gillibrand showed 0 votes for president. Voters have filed sworn affidavits stating they voted for Harris but their selections were apparently not registered. Newsweek.
