I know this story is unlikely to be unique, but I need to scream into the ether. I have a trio of nieces and a nephew who are on the spectrum with varying types of special needs. The utter, heart breaking sadness that they have expressed over this BS Tylenol tomfoolery is just...(waves hands)...💔

Via "One First," my quick write-up of President Trump's "Presidential Memorandum" purporting to federalize 2000 California National Guard troops; the relevant legal authorities for doing so; and how the move is both a modest *and* dangerous escalation of what's going on in and around Los Angeles:
156. Federalizing the California National Guard
President Trump's Saturday night "memorandum" federalizing 2000 California National Guard troops is a tentative step toward abusing authorities for domestic use of the military, but a dangerous one.

WATCH: Dr. Kevin Hall is departing NIH after 21 years at his “dream job.” He says his research findings were being censored under RFK Jr.

"What is it going to be like if they want to start actually meddling in the research itself?"

We interviewed Kevin Hall for our recent ep on nutrition science history, he was brilliant. His research is fascinating, his approach open/curious, his work meticulously designed. He's open to being wrong, explains limitations. We finished the call wishing he ran HHS. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/16/w...
Leading Nutrition Scientist Departs N.I.H., Citing Censorship
Kevin Hall said his work on ultraprocessed foods has been “hobbled” under the Trump administration. Scientists have been raising such concerns for months.

After 21 years at my dream job, I’m very sad to announce my early retirement from the National Institutes of Health. My life’s work has been to scientifically study how our food environment affects what we eat, and how what we eat affects our physiology.

Pretty sure that this is the first time a “One First” post has been cited in a judicial opinion—here, in Judge Thacker’s concurrence in the Fourth Circuit’s denial of the government’s stay request in Abrego García:

If you're looking for an explainer on why due process matters to share with friends and family members who might ... need convincing, I've removed the (partial) paywall from my March 19 post for "One First" on the topic:

Bonus 133: Due Process and the Rule of Law
Too many Americans don't understand, at a basic level, *why* the Constitution requires due process when the government deprives anyone of their life, liberty, or property.

As of Friday, there have been 46 cases in which federal judges have blocked Trump policies.

The rulings in those cases have come from 39 different judges appointed by 5 different presidents (of both parties) to 11 different district courts across 7 different circuits.

Maybe it's not the judges?

Heartbreaking to see announcements of major layoffs at most research organizations that have played a vital role in supporting federal statistics for education and developing high-quality evidence about what policies/practices actually work.
