THAT I think is the way to do it.

One of my struggles with my current game - The Code of Cthulhu - is that the playtest scenario - which is going to form the Prologue Scenario and the basis for the whole first half of the book - has branches that players have never explored during testing.

The other hasn’t reason to exist except for the fact that I was in a fascinated with Steampunk and @johnharper.bsky.social ’s Lasers & Feeling - which I’ve also never played (I think) and wondered if I could mate the two together.

I could.

Again I’ve never played “Gears and Gentility”.

Can someone think up a GAME & publish it without playing it? You’d think not. But I have.

Twice.

5 cards is an idea I thought up for “The 500 word RPG challenge” one year.

The whole concept of that event goes against what I’d call my principles. But the evil title designer imp in my head….

This is a real rabbit hole.

The first thing that sticks out to me is that my MOST-LIKED post got……..

FORTY-ONE likes.

(Is that all?)

The second is that my third word - under game/games is PLAYERS. It’s above RULES. I like that.

Here it is in words. It looks like I have to put your Bluesky handle @symatt.bsky.social to move you up.

So THAT’s a rabbit hole.

This area had two tiny tables in it - one for information on/to sign up the TTRPGs, the other for the TTRPG Referees. There was a single pull-up banner with the word RPGs on it to show that.

Not a complaint. my day as a TTRPG ref was pretty perfect.

Just a note.

Then I MIGHT be able to use these if I give context and use them appropriately. Yes there’s the young women and tentacles issue but in the context of a Cthulhu game…..

So have I made the right choices*?

SPEAK UP (please).

* I’ve included at least one dodgy one To test you.

Which means I can use these images. Multiple images featuring the same characters. I can name them. Have them make “comments” on the game etc. This is GOLD.

But would use this. Two young ladies, one black one white, leaning on a wall with a car and building in the background. Mini skirts, boots and cleavage again but at least this time they’re buttoned up. I think THIS is acceptable in context.

I won’t use this. Two young 1960’s females. One black one white, in miniskirts and boots. Just standing up. No horror. But their breasts are prominent, bordering on soft porn.

But I will us this: two young ladies - one black, one white - fighting back against a ghoul. Strangling it. Skimpy outfits not shown. Showing female agency (not being saved by men). Really strong. No reason not to use.

I’ve decided I won-t use this (not even sure if it’s part of the series): B&W image of a half-naked girl being terrorised by zombies.

Firstly this would allow me to us a more. Interesting cover. The placeholder is this. A piece of Art by Dean Spencer (Link in the next post).

A bloody great image of Cthulhu:

£12.10 with license for commercial use!

He is mainly fantasy, but he’s got few other possible images I could use.

(B) The rules are a competent TTRPG system. Very detailed & could easily be adapted to most settings and genres.

But not Trumpton.

The glaring mismatch is incredibly ironic in away that appeals to many Brits.

I’ve played in (I think) two scenarios over the years. The first was pre-covid.

Would you - could you - bring yourself to run “Trumpton- the Role-playing Game” even it if had a completely inappropriate trad set of rules?

Yes, I’m in possession of a copy of the Trumpton TTRPG rules. (C) 1987. I don’t know if I have the rights to share. (Alas.)

Good day. 2 good games. Great players. Good referee. (I AM good.)

Good venue. The 8 tables in the perfect rooms worked well.

Trade hall packed but looked small. Lots of room to expand.

(1960’s illos are now in the public domain?)

The pics shoe and unfolding narrative. They’re kidnapped by ghouls, escape by strangling one. Find they’re on a zombie pirate ship. Get thrown overboard to drown. Dealing with tentacles, whirlpools etc.

Again the issue: naked/semi-naked women being terrorised by horrors. It all feels a bit uncomfortable. Can I bring myself to use them? Should I?

But then in one pack I find a series of illustrations.

Two young women. One white. One black. Mini-skirts and boots. 1960’s vibe.

I had real issues with a pulp SciFi images in some packs I bought. Lovely pulp illustrations but lots of flesh showing. Apparently you can survive in space half naked in a nightie if your wear a space helmet.

So I’m writing my Horror Game & having trouble finding art. I down-load pulp horror.

I try to express principles in my use of Art. Whether this is being Woke or Virtue Signalling others can decide for themselves.

One of my sources of art is stock art collections of art from old pulp magazines. But these often express values of the original times they were created.

Stock Art vs. Designer Values. I compromise acceptable?

Anyone can have imaginative ideas and clear values and press it through their writing. But if you want those ideas and values expressed in the art on your game book you have to pay for it. Or compromise.
