Theoretically, there should be because parties can’t collude to settle a dispute if doing so would violate the principles of an adversarial system.

They get around that by making sure the case lands in front of “friendly” judges like Aileen Cannon or Reed O’Connor.

Even if he wasn’t, Maxwell was appealing her conviction so the evidence had to be preserved on the long-shot chance she would get either a new trial or new sentencing hearing. That appeal ended last month.
