“DOE wants to remove 12 civil rights rules. Part of these are disability access protections. They say the rules are unnecessary & outdated”

This will mean buildings aren’t accessible to disabled people. Another step towards eliminating us from society

when i worked on that one block of uptown, we'd get ppl coming in all the time asking about how badly a loss of parking had affected our business. (it had little to no consequences i could see, beyond ppl asking about it all the time.)

Everything’s a competition in this cutthroat business world. What if I have to fire myself for poor performance? Shameful.

I think we are not the target audience for, perhaps, anything here.

... and the reasoning behind that AI's creation, her journey thru becoming embodied, and her relationship with the people around her can intersect with ideas about LLMs briefly without that being the focus. The point is she's expected to act one way and acts another, and that scares ppl.

Or in Remember You Will Die by Eden Robins, making our frame character an AI AND a mother means we go in asking qs about memory, grief, what family is, bodily autonomy, motherhood. There's a bit early on formatted like an autocomplete search query that started to make the novel click for me ...

And Horatio makes the most sense to be an AI because he's always the witness to Hamlet's story, a man of lower status who has to follow the social codes of his time/space ... much like AI-Horatio is constrained by his programming. He's everywhere and yet can only do so much.

In The Death I Gave Him by Em X Liu, Horatio is an AI bc in a story about death & escaping it, having a character who is a machine intelligence opens up more conversations about what life and death are, who is alive and who is not, is there a ghost? There COULD be a ghost.

(like i know this was a rhetorical q you then answer for yourself, but i think good sf is curious about what tech/science can do, but isn't beholden to engaging directly with a pop sci/pop tech understanding; rather, tech & science are resources, inspiration, and points of reflection.)

I think the thing is that AI are often a metaphor for something else in sf? They're a flexible & potent tool, and what writers mean by "AI" and what tech means by "AI" are often different things, and I think evolving the language we use to indicate that separation can be necessary.

In all honesty, I'm extremely excited to be working on this w/ Em. It's great to have something to be excited about, even if it DOES involve forms & taxes & the slow creeping realization one is going to need to do things like "hire an accountant" and "consort with the devil (ingram)"
