Using gen AI is essentially the same as using assets from a database; you type keywords into a box and hope that it comes up with what you were picturing. You may be willing to pay for what comes out of it, but is anyone willing to pay someone else to do the typing, when they can type too?

2 second sample in song? Not transformative enough. Song has same chord progression? See you in court. And you better keep a roll of gaffer tape handy to cover up all those logos on clothing.

I see two scenarios:

Scenario A: the AI evangelists are correct. Craft loses all relevance. We all rot in a 24hr custom hallucination. Pros adopting AI for content creation didn’t help.

Scenario B: Things made by skilled humans still have value. Pros adopting AI for content creation didn’t help.

Put it another way: when camera phones became ubiquitous, it was clear that the value of professional photography was going to change.

Nobody was saying, “the only way forward is for photographers use throw away their gear and use phones instead.”

It feels like I’m saying, “there shouldn’t be food insecurity in the world,” and people are replying, “I have a right to eat! See how you feel about it when you’re hungry!”

People instinctively reframe the discussion to be about passivity. They can’t imagine a world in which there isn’t a threat around every corner. So advocating for peace sounds like advocating for doormat-ism.

Those are the reasons why peace is difficult, but they don’t make it impossible and I think that, frankly, annoys some people. They reframe the discussion to shut it down. “People have a right to defend themselves! See how peace and love work when you’re being beaten down in the street.”

I think there’s an unspoken strain of thought that believes that violent conflict is an inevitable part of humanity. “You don’t understand, resources are scarce, the ways of life are incompatible, the feud stretches back to infinity.”
