I see folks talking about the whole language approach to literacy and how it explains why so many people today cannot read. I wrote this thread almost 2 years ago, and it's as relevant today as it was then. Little has changed.
There are 2 primary drivers behind why so many students, especially in middle and high school, are not able to do basic skills required for their classrooms.

The first is the whole language reading movement, which has fucked up reading education for going on 2 generations now.

I remember learning in one of my linguistics classes that ESL children often fall behind in math and other subjects because of the language barrier when they'd thrive if they could learn them in their native language (pretty obvious in retrospect) and it still makes my heart ache. what a disservice

this whole time I really thought it was the combination of widespread undiagnosed ADHD and dyslexia, lack of resources and support in classrooms and at home, and language barriers (which can be rolled into "lack of support and resources")
