Oh my gosh, PhD candidates Carol Vieira da Silva & @spasqualetti.bsky.social won 1 & 2 place, respectfully, in the UConn Graduate Student Research Symposium! Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

My student @spasqualetti.bsky.social gave an excellent talk (I'm a little biased) about identifying microbes from stickleback that are able to degrade plastics. She also found that microbes in community have enhanced ability to break down plastics. Proud PI status

@spasqualetti.bsky.social and @sticklestock.bsky.social manager Holly are leaving today, so we hiked part of Powerline. They are able to leave early this year because we were able to get all our fish in record time. I'll stick around Anchorage for meetings, then head home. Beautiful day for a hike!

Thank you!!
I had 2 awesome things happen today:

1. PhD student @spasqualetti.bsky.social became a PhD candidate, as she passed her 3rd year exam! She was excellent in her oral presentation, written portion, and q&a with the committee. I definitely did a happy dance!
