Enjoyed writing this with @sosyolohija.bsky.social (with much encouragement from @rosselle.bsky.social). Hoping this opens a discussion on an often neglected aspect of the current impeachment saga—one beyond the legalese—i.e., its shifting function in Philippine democracy.
Independent of its merits, Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment exposes the tension between political agendas and constitutional principles, highlighting risks to democratic integrity, write Paolo S Tamase and Athena Charanne Presto.
Impeachment a key weapon in the Philippines’ Marcos–Duterte divide

Hi, fellow migrants from Twitter. How’s this platform so far?

Two political families with histories of large-scale abuse are competing for public favor in the Philippines. The political competition revolves around reputational damage control rather than meaningful change or accountability. No policy arguments, only mudslinging. A spectacle, and a grim one.

The 2024 Global Gender Gap Report is out.

The Philippines has gained in education parity.‼️ But this has not translated to economic participation and political empowerment, with the country consistently among the low performers in the health subindex ‼️

Flew to Germany with @sosyolohija.bsky.social to speak at ICI Berlin on queer crossings in global contexts. We shared how the legacy of colonial legal regimes governs aspects of gender in social and political life in the Philippines, and in what ways we can engage in critical examination.

Women’s month comes to a close today but the work continues. This year, I was invited to a conversation reflecting on the roles of women’s rights organizations as agents of change, organized by the UK Embassy Manila. Happy to also see advocates and allies like Atty Leni Robredo in attendance. 💜

Sharing our attempt to contribute to tackling a longstanding issue faced by Filipino youth.

Adolescent pregnancy is not solely the "private trouble" of girls. The problem is necessarily public, with corresponding complex social policy options.

Very important yet often glossed over fact: Prior to Marcos' Martial Law, a robust human rights and social justice system had already been in place in the Philippines.

The ML declaration rolled back protections for human rights by exercising unbridled presidential power.

Read:
Today, Dec 10, is human rights day. @HRVVMC launched “Essential Truths about Human Rights during the Martial Law Era”, 3rd of a series of open access publications. Happy to see this in its final form since taking on the project early 2023.

So terribly gutted by all the videos and images coming from Gaza. THIS MUST STOP. Civilians and critical infrastructure are being wiped out. THIS IS NOT RIGHT AND IT IS NOT RIGHT TO BE SILENT ABOUT IT.

If international criminal law does not respond forcefully, and fairly, to the challenges of our time, especially given the scale of what has been going on in Ukraine and in Israel and Gaza, then we have a failed project on our hands. If it stays quiet on this, we can all pack up and go home. #ICL
