History professor at a small liberal arts college in NYC, dad, husband, leftish, rarely in that order.
My son has discovered the Home Alone movies and I am now officially on the side of the burglars.

Note the new "Connections to productivity tools like Canva, Google Drive, and Microsoft 365" (aka ways to collect data, privatize and control education) and so much more that's terrible in OpenAI's free ChatGPT for teachers: thejournal.com/articles/202...

I remain skeptical that any rich people plot to control the media requires them to bother dictating day to day coverage, when class solidarity can also get it done, and with less effort

As excited as I am to see Mamdani win, really irritating to see pundits so quickly say that it's just a New York thing, and that the lesson of last night is that Democrats need to run more centrists like Spanberger.

Not much could bring the nation together the way the total lack of mourning for Dick Cheney will.

If ICE keeps having recruiting problems, what are the chances they try to start hiring undocumented people?

My kids school assigned him a lengthy book about Henry Ford, as a brilliant inventor. I am saying nothing to his teachers.

But my son is getting lengthy explanations about what a creep Ford was and what happened to the workers at Ford plants.

Bothsidesism works when your side can postpone TV.

Anyone else have a university administrator type who has been marketed to directly by AI companies?
Our president is rather stupidly bragging about the free AI subscription that someone gave her, and our provost is very happy about her exciting meeting with some other AI company...

Did yesterday's faculty meeting include an hour and a half when we were supposed to be building structures out of pasta to hold marshmallows?

Yes, yes it did.

But in fairness, saying "no" and ignoring the nonsense was good practice for my basic game plan for the year. I have writing to do.

If Washington is taken over, don't kid yourself that every other blue city isn't next. Pretending that this is about Home Rule etc is pretending that the SCOTUS will step in.

I've seen this on Bluesky and had to try it myself. The image below was the response to the prompt: "Show me a diagram of the US presidents since Herbert Hoover, with their names and years in office under their photos" Bravo, OpenAI, bravo.

Seeking good sources critiquing AI. My little university is starting the year with a workshop on "how to ethically teach AI" and while I'm fully convinced of the contradictions there, I'd like more people to cite if possible.

Anyone happen to remember the title/lyrics to an Attica protest song with the chorus, "Attica means fight back, my friends, and fight back means today!"

My dad, kind of a talented amateur folk singer in that era, used to sing it and I really would like to play it for my students but can't find it.

It would be amazing if universities could read this.
If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

My goal for this coming academic year: as little free "service" to the university as possible. They can treat faculty like peons but we don't have to treat ourselves as unpaid labor.
