I feel like we should not be calling these “deportations.” That term has a legal definition or, at the very least, it connotes a degree of process that the government isn’t even pretending to afford.

If I were questioning Trump’s cabinet picks, I’d walk through the resumes of the nominees’ predecessors, then ask simply: “In what way are you qualified to take over for this person?”

America’s oligarchs have gotten bolder over time. They used to hide behind lobbyists, super PACs, and “grassroots” orgs. Now they openly corrupt social platforms, boast about killing newspaper endorsements, and literally dance onstage with candidates.

God help us.
For no particular reason this morning I am thinking of this example of the president-elect’s imbecility

"Repeat after me: there was no 'landslide'. There was no 'blowout'. There was no 'sweeping' mandate given to Trump by the electorate. The numbers don’t lie."

My new Guardian op-ed on the new GOP election lie - and why it's important to rebut it! I brought (lots of) receipts:
Donald Trump didn’t win by a historic landslide. It’s time to nip that lie in the bud | Mehdi Hasan
In 2024, we have a new post-election lie – Trump didn’t just win, Republicans say, but he won big. He won a landslide. That’s false

Biden’s personal interests coinciding with the public’s doesn’t transform it into something unjust or lessen its sense of mercy. To me, his interests are a plus. His family has suffered so much, and he has given everything to the US, asking him to sacrifice his son too would be unjust/unmerciful.
The mistake was saying he wouldn’t do it. As the article below notes, “the pardon power is intended as a tool for justice and mercy…and to further ‘the public welfare.’ ” (quoting SCOTUS). Undoing political prosecutions of pols’ family meets all 3 criteria.

Presidential pardons are not unlimited, and are subject to constitutional constraints from every branch of government.

The Hunter pardon only makes it harder to criticize Trump in the media’s “both-sidesism” framing. It’s diff. in virtually every sense. More than that, though, I just don’t care. A lifetime of service earns you an occasional selfish act. Frankly, I would judge him more if he didn’t pardon Hunter.

Wow. Which is it: (1) breathtakingly naive or (2) peak-level gaslighting?
I think @washingtonpost.com has finally lost its whole damn mind. The US Constitution has been absolutely obliterated by this Supreme Court
phew it's a good thing our constitution is extraordinarily difficult to amend and wannabe autocrats can't do something like get their co-partisans on the constitutional court to recognize an atextual immunity from criminal law.

I always said he’d get away with it. The rich, esp. rich white guys, are rarely held accountable. My partner, a white guy, said it’d be different this time; the MAL “raid” was proof enough. Yesterday, in a dejected tone, he said “You were right.” Normally I’d gloat, but I really wanted to be wrong.

How can something make you want to scream AND render you speechless?

I used to wonder whether these so-called pro-lifers were stupid, sociopathic, or just plain evil. I no longer feel so limited.
REPUBLICANS—IS THIS PRO-LIFE⁉️

If Matt Gaetz hadn’t hadn’t sexually abused multiple teenagers, they’d release the report.

If Trump hadn’t cheated on his taxes, he’d release them.

If Trump didn’t lie about the assassination attempt and medical report they’d release that.

That’s why everyone around them has to sign NDA’s.

Crazy how there’s no DEI drumbeat for Trump’s absurdly unqualified cabinet picks. Actually, unqualified isn’t strong enough. Is “anti-qualified” a word?
