Homesteadish stuff. Dogs, cats, geese, chickens, gardening, orchard cultivation, permaculture, food preservation, crafts, herbals, natural building, folk wisdom, and politics.
I definitely did not have 'Art Vandelay Starts a World Recession' on my 2025 bingo card.

Then very quickly.

Cold days are for carving: poplar, maple, roasted maple, walnut, apple, and something reddish from a scrap pile

Dear Hot Water Heater,

That's not what "Dry January" means.

Made the beans.
Made the pot of chili.
Made the cornbread from locally grown organic heirloom corn packed in on donkeyback by monks sworn to vows of silence on ancient texts never before read by mortals and ground in a tabletop mill on my lunch break.

Forgot to salt the cornbread.

Today is the day to plant allium seeds. Start indoors in the deepest pots you can spare. Crowd their elbows, not their feet.

Dogs run up on a skunk last night. The older one hit the brakes in time and let the youngling learn by doing.

Skunk funk cleaner:
Dawn dish soap
Hydrogen peroxide
Baking soda

Mix together to make a foamy paste. Lather it into the affected area. Let sit about 10 minutes. Wash off.

My office colleagues voted White Chicken Chili as the winner of the Christmas Chili Cookoff.

Y'all.
I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed.

Today's assignment:
1. Find some empty boxes (soda 12 packs are perfect for this exercise)
2. Stack boxes side-by-side in a row (or three)
3. Pull your arms back into your shirt, elbows at your ribcage, with only your hands sticking out

Sunchokes prefer loose, well-drained soil. Seriously though, who doesn't?

Sunchokes are also known as "fartichokes". Keep this in mind as you plant your sustainable perennial food forest.

Sunchokes are a sunflower relative native to North America - and are not related to artichokes
