Aging millennial dad living in Kelowna, BC. I like politics, sports, and history stuff.
If this type of weather is not suitable for play in Scandinavia, why is it ok for MLS? The US played a single cold weather qualifier in Minnesota and the pundits made a massive deal about how unsafe and irresponsible it was.

I was not expecting Hibbing and International Falls to catch a couple haymakers while reading a Pierre Poilievre biography. Uffda @drmarkbourrie.bsky.social!

Canada could give smaller parties a fair chance and still keep the important benefits of regional representation in a first past post system if we adopted ranked choice. See example from Australia where the right can’t form government by racking up a bunch of 35% wins.

More NDP ridings went Conservative than Liberal. Not ideal!
April 30, 2025 at 2:42 PM
In the end it looks like it’s a 14 point improvement for the Conservatives, but not nearly enough to get over the top.

Liberals hanging tough in Kelowna!

Fascinating to see where this one ends up. Can only be seen as a repudiation of the Liberal posture towards Israel if the Tories pick it up.

Long lines to vote in Kelowna a week out from election day. Curious to see where turnout lands.

I love to be optimistic but I don’t see how these projections make any sense based on the Leger BC data. They don’t have Okanagan specific polling just a “other BC” sample of 125 and CPC is up by 10 points. Not sure why that translates to a CPC wipeout. I would wait for 338 riding projections.

Ford jokes he’ll make an offer for Minnesota, Kinew talks about vacations in the Twin Cities, Poilievre says we’d never dictate language laws to Minnesota. In my experience many Canadians confuse Minnesota with Michigan, so not sure why it seems to be a top of mind state for Canadian pols!

I’ve noticed that BC Ferries, like other Crown Corps, can be a bit of a punching bag, but after taking a couple routes for the first time in a decade I have to say I was quite impressed by the service level and experience. Even the food was pretty good!

It’s actually illuminating how triggered he was by the electricity surcharge. Thanks for confirming our point of leverage for us, bud.

God help us if Andrew Scheer is the best finance minister the Tories can come up with during an existential trade war.

Very Minnesota centric interview from Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew on the CBC. Unfortunately name checks NFL games instead of Twins! Later goes on to say Manitoba Hydro is reviewing electricity export contracts.

Canada is 1/10th the size and has 6x as many chicken farms! Canadians often complain about more expensive food costs vs US, but there are many benefits to having an agriculture ecosystem in which family farms still exist. www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/pe...

Not an economist, but don’t see how this won’t result in complete devastation of the Canadian economy. The two economies are so throughly integrated that it’s hard to contemplate how Canadians could even mount consumer boycotts. It will take a decade to rewire the economy and find a new way forward.

Normal People by Sally Rooney 5/5

I read very little fiction but decided to give it a go after listening to a NYT interview with Rooney and loved it! Truly grabbed me and took me deep into the mindsets of the characters. Will definitely be reading Rooney’s other stuff now.

The Big Fix by Hearn and Bednar 4/5

Does a good job of pulling lots of strands together and comparing US and Canadian monopolies and antitrust mechanisms, but I was hoping for deeper insight on Canadian monopolies. Mostly surface levels stuff on grocery, telecom, private equity. Very academic.

The Prince by Stephen Maher 3.5/5

Some good insight into Trudeau’s initial strength as a politician and terrible weaknesses in cabinet and caucus management. Overall I felt the book slipped too much into news story recaps for long stretches. Wanted more analysis or new info.

Using Power Well by Bob Williams 5/5

Highly recommend if you’re a political nerd. Deep insight on BC’s one true Social Democratic govt and other great info about Van in the 70s, city planning, the case for govt intervention to spur economic growth, & dirt on various shady dealings in BC politics.

Time off over the holidays meant I was able to do some reading. My quick take reviews:

Dominion by Stephen Brown 4/5

Don’t think this lives up to the standard of Brown’s last book, The Company, but good insight into the poli & business maneuvering, economic sovereignty motives of the period.

There are not many people that would argue with you that RB Bennett was a trash PM, but if you’re contending that he was pro-American BECAUSE he didn’t want to copy FDR you’re not on the strongest ground. Conservatives historically were very suspicious of the US and Bennett was no exception.
