Last night’s opening reception of “Piet Zwart: Brand Architect” was a great beginning for a great exhibition at @letterformarchive.org. Well worth a visit!

Baffled by this review on OpenTable. It’s fine if you like the restaurant regardless, but this is not 5-star service.

My god, such a nice morning here for the Monterey Bay Half Marathon!

Hiking today in Del Monte Forest in Pebble Beach, we came across a cluster of wild golf balls growing in their natural environment, just about ripe and ready for harvesting by the golf farmers.

I still have my trusty Discwasher that I bought in the early ’80s. Seems to still work just fine!

Cleaning out the office, I ran across this charming relic from days gone by.

I got to spend a couple hours today with the family and friends of the late, great Jim Parkinson at his house in the Oakland hills. These melancholy occasions are always redeemed by the chance to reminisce and reflect on life.

This has been tucked away in my house and I just unearthed it — a relic from the early desktop publishing days, where a desk set (it’s a magnifying glass and letter opener) to promote fonts for the NeXT computer was just the thing.

I wanted to watch the Clint Eastwood movie “Blood Work,” and my search, unsurprisingly, worked. But wtf is this other suggestion, “drama movies like blood”?

Behold Adobe Rad (1993). 😬

Long ago I scanned an article from Southwest Airlines’ Spirit magazine, which featured recipes for some different spirits. This is the section on Bols genever.

I was in a carpet/flooring store yesterday and... wow, I think this company needs to think hard about its brand design.

I love that the ads on this page advertise “Jobs in Germany”.

There’s also the memorable bit with Scotty drinking another Kelvan under the table. The episode is light on Star Trek’s best cerebral tendencies, but there’s a great idea in how the Kelvans inherit human impulses and vulnerabilities when they are forced to take humanoid form.

I watched a lot of Star Trek as a kid in the ’70s, and I had forgotten what a big impression this episode made on me. The whole thing with the Kelvans reducing humans to small, crushable geometric objects was both fascinating and terrifying to me. (Of course the first to go is a “red shirt”.)

Last night we watched the Star Trek episode “By Any Other Name” and I have to say it’s probably an under-the-radar top five episode. Full of classic TOS elements, particularly a canonical example of Kirk seducing the sexy (“female”) alien with his reliable “But have you tried kissing?” move.

Not far from our house is Eugene O’Neill’s Tao House (now a National Historic Site), where he lived from 1937–1944 and wrote some of his best-known plays. Yesterday we hiked up there and took a tour, and learned a lot about O’Neill’s life and work. Recommended!

Just a reality check for all the posts about Disney stock being down recently. It’s still up 21% Y/Y and about 40% from its 52-week low in April.

Ah, the Nextdoor “Top Post” emails are a constant source of amusement.

A couple more pictures from (the spectacular) Point Lobos this morning. First, looking south to the Carmel Highlands, and then “Bird Island,” which really is a kind of otherworldly bit of land just offshore.
September 18, 2025 at 12:06 AM
Hiking around Point Lobos this morning, we passed a very vocal scrub jay that conveniently emerged to strike and hold a pose for my camera. On the other hand, a bunny didn’t stay around very long, but did sit very still for a moment, probably knowing that it was virtually invisible.

Big Sur, California, today. Some probably recognize this as the view from Nepenthe — where it seems like it’s always sunny.

In downtown Martinez, CA, today, we revisited the plaque on a nondescript streetcorner commemorating the “birthplace of the Martini.” I think everyone today agrees this story is apocryphal, as much as this former Martinez resident would like to think otherwise.
September 13, 2025 at 11:59 PM
Hiking in the Martinez hills today, a big tarantula crossed our path. They are known to be around here, but this is actually the first one I’ve seen.

Mixed up a Martini with this old bottle of Tanqueray Malacca gin, which is just about gone. (I have another one, though.) It’s a very soft, pleasant gin. This one was 2¼ oz. gin to ¾ oz. vermouth, which might still be too much vermouth in retrospect. (Yes, the cocktail is already partially-drunk.)
