Tell you what, Yugoslavia between the wars was a funny old place but the football governance was truly something else. It’s exhausting just reading about how mad it all was… not sure how anyone had any energy left for the actual football.

Too many hard-luck stories in so many of their games this season (Galatasaray pen, United head injury etc). Ultimately the not-great teams leave themselves open to those margins and that's where Liverpool are.

Games against City really do show where Liverpool are in a given season. If they are off it, they take a hammering. City do not let them off. #MCILIV

Pep Guardiola believes Liverpool are his greatest rivals and the perfect team for Manchester City to be playing in what will be his 1,000th game as a manager.

Above Napoli. Above Juventus.
It is an historic night for Cypriot side Pafos.

They earned their first-ever win in the Champions League, beating Villarreal in Kolossi thanks to Derrick Luckassen’s header from Ken Sema’s corner.

✌️
Very few teams muster 2.5 non-penalty xG and nine shots on target against Real Madrid.

Liverpool just did.

Finally found an antidote to Courtois.

Best performance since City away in February… but, yeah, why didn’t Slot play his best XI against Palace? 🤷
Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0 at Anfield thanks to Alexis Mac Allister's goal.

A huge win for Arne Slot's side, with Manchester City next on Sunday.

It’s Pablo Aimar’s birthday today. You remember him.

Argentina. Playmaker. Championship Manager legend.

Anyway, here’s 160 seconds of him showing total disregard for his fellow professionals.

First Liverpool game with only one sub since 3-3 at Brentford in 2021.

Slot hadn’t previously made fewer than three substitutions at Liverpool
When was the last time Arne only made 1 sub, @andrewbeasleyfootball.com?

I can’t be the only person, who winces every time the “Swiss model” is mentioned. Anyone who’s ever played chess knows that the model that’s used in the Champions League really isn’t very “Swiss” at all.
The man who says he invented the Champions League’s new format - what he calls the “pots” format but has become known as the “Swiss model” - is suing UEFA for €20m because he claims they stole it. UEFA denies it but it’s been that kind of week for the governing body.

An excellent pod. Naturally, ears pricked up at the mention of my stomping grounds past and present, Berkeley and Bushy Park.

Seriously, where was @nickmiller79.bsky.social with his fancy charts a week ago? Nothing prepared me for two goals off long throws in two games in the space of about 5 hours… Yes, Sunderland and Brentford were playing. Still feel like a fool. (shakes head)
The return of the long throw adds theatre and goals. But it also brings delays and more time when the ball is not in play.

Does something need to be done? A countdown clock is one solution that has been discussed by football's lawmakers this week.

Feeling discombobulated by all those long throws, free-kicks and corners? Give this a listen. It’s what Diego would’ve wanted. Deffo.

Old enough to remember a Liverpool manager playing the reserves at the Bernabeu because he had Chelsea on Saturday*. So, nothing but a #shrug @ tonight’s approach.
*Lost them both.
Think that result and performance was baked in from the moment the teamsheets dropped here, and so it was a big call from Arne Slot to leave so many out. But it won't look like a smart decision if Liverpool don't see the benefits across the next three - a huge week coming up.

So, Toppmöller drops the goalie who conceded 18 in 5 but Eintracht still concede 5.
Was the goalie really the problem, Dino? Mind you, it might’ve been double figures with Kaua Santos in nets.
Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool FT

After a shaky start, Liverpool bounced back to banish any talk of a crisis with an emphatic win.
