I just found out there's a new KTM Komuter station (Segambut Utara)

So... I went there to take some pics 📸

Street food kiosks + air cond is such a 10/10 idea that I'm surprised no (or barely any) Malaysian malls do it

฿10 meat skewer, ฿60 laksa, ฿20 savoury apam balik, ฿30 sliced fruit, ฿20 iced tea

I'm OBSESSED

🎉 GREAT NEWS 🎉

For the first time since RapidKL published their weekly report in mid-2023, all of their escalators AND lifts are functional (read: none were broken for more than a week).

To celebrate the news, I've drawn out possible stations for the Pasir Gudang Komuter:

Gombak bus terminal has opened and soon, the ECRL station

When will RapidKL add another escalator to the Gombak LRT station?

It's so funny that a lot of Malaysians think we're singlehandedly propping the Indonesia HSR alive when the data itself tells a very different story

.... no, Indonesians DO ride the HSR. More than entire ridership of ETS even.

RapidKL, why???? So close 😭😭😭
April 12, 2025 at 7:15 AM
Look at this frequency. Even RapidKL buses to middle-of-nowhere Batu 12 Gombak OR Pangsun, Hulu Langat are >3x more frequent than this

🔊 BREAKING NEWS 🔊

MPSepang is shutting down half of its Smart Selangor bus network on March 31st:
SPG3 - Cyberjaya to Jenderam Hilir
SPG4 - IOI City Mall to Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi

I very much am a critic of the bus because it's extremely infrequent (how bad? KTM is better)

Update:
ADUN probably only cared about this issue NOW because the developer made a noise about it

The developer got their wish and close down this footpath and try very hard to block it

Problem: People still walk here. So now it becomes 10x more dangerous for the pedestrians

Life Update 🌴

Haven't tweeted much in the past few months because I’ve been busy being an urbanist: restoring an old shoplot in central KL to be converted to a third space.

We need more Komuter trains
February 10, 2025 at 11:30 PM
Instead of constructing a proper sidewalk, the authorities instead chose the easiest (and cowardly option):
Banning pedestrians

One trick that KL has up its sleeve is that most new residential development are ultra-dense. We're talking >1000 units that's for families.

Almost every other MRT station has (or will have) one like this.
January 20, 2025 at 2:24 AM
In terms of station statistics, here are the top 10 busiest LRT, MRT, or Monorail stations in 2024

Of course all of them are in KL CBD and they have huge attractors: megamalls, offices, and/or tourist hotspot. And all of them saw huge increase in ridership (except Masjid Jamek)
January 20, 2025 at 12:05 AM
Ridership is still very much commuter oriented with weekdays carrying 50% more riders than weekends in 2024. Covid still made an impact to this model where weekday ridership for the LRTs are still struggling while weekend ridership have fully recovered from Covid.
January 20, 2025 at 12:05 AM
In terms of average weekday ridership, RapidKL is still below the 1 million mark (995k in Nov 2024), sadly.

Analyzing by line:
KGL now being neck-and-neck with KJL (275k vs 278k)
PYL grew 44% from 105k to 151k
KJL is still wayyy below pre-Covid (315k vs 278k)
January 20, 2025 at 12:05 AM
Broken down by each line, the MRTs and KL Monorail are seeing explosive growth, while the LRTs are growing but still below pre-Covid

Special note:
PYL saw the biggest y-o-y gain of 44% since Phase 2
KGL is up 32% from pre-Covid and has surpassed KJL
MRL is up 60% since Covid
January 20, 2025 at 12:05 AM
2024 is another fantastic year for RapidKL with y-o-y increase of 26%. For the first time, RapidKL has breached the 300 million passengers mark, breaking all previous records 🎉 🎉 🎉

Even if we exclude PYL (MRT2), RapidKL still surpassed pre-Covid numbers by 7%.
January 20, 2025 at 12:05 AM
2024 ridership data for RapidKL is now out. 🧵 making sense of the data

Spoiler: It's a banger year for RapidKL

Given PIL 1 will be TOLL-FREE and funded by TAXPAYERS, that same pot of money could have built rapid transit to cover all of the island instead

It's 2024 we should be FOCUSING on PUBLIC transportation 🤦
January 15, 2025 at 7:30 AM
Have the government not learned at all urban highways do NOT work?

AKLEH didn't fix traffic
SUKE didn't fix traffic
DASH didn't fix traffic
SPE didn't fix traffic

Building PIL will just add more cars on the island, making traffic worse for everyone
