The Gladstone memorial on The Strand. Main plinth is Portland Stone, but the steps are a bit more exotic; Nabresina limestone from Istria with rudists, echinoids, fish teeth, gastropods, in fact, the whole frutti di mare pizza #urbangeology #london

ALARM!

Russia sees its Arctic not as a shared space but as its own trade path for Eurasian links, set by its own rules.

Sanctions have cut the speed, but not the goal. Home-grown tools, money from Asia, and nuclear icebreakers form a strong base.

Are we headed for an actual climate disaster? "Growth of GHG forcing has diverged dramatically from that scenario (RCP2.6), with reality being close to the extreme RCP8.5 scenario"
This is catastrophic. RCP8.5 will basically wipe out civilisation as we know it

While the entire weather enterprise - it seems - is focused on extreme US cold - which may take weeks to materialize, the country has been roasting. Over the past 7 days 100s of heat records have been broken, and the nation as a whole has been ~4F above normal. +20F near the Ark-La-Tx!!

“The incalculable damage left by Bush and Cheney’s day-in-and-day-out contempt for national and international law includes the power to sweep forward in time and trivialize into a matter of personal preference any future president’s adherence to the law.“

I remember early on the Dueling Dinosaurs ceratopsian was believed to be a new taxon. There was a video with Pete Larson physically pointing to some supposedly diagnostic features.

When a few years later everyone agreed "jk it's just a Triceratops lol", I felt the whiplash.

He’s not mentioning the regular people in Chicago, Portland and Los Angeles that are getting arrested standing up to ice and police in general. Glad there’s a lot of commentary pushing back on this narrative.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.
